No fewer than 30, 000 Nigerian pilgrims will have the privilege of
travelling alongside President Goodluck Jonathan to Israel, Rome and
Greece for the 2013 pilgrimage exercise.
This was disclosed by
the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC),
Mr John Kennedy Opara, during the flag-off of the screening of pilgrims
which was held at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Christian Welfare
Board in Abuja, yesterday.
Mr
Opara noted that it would be the first time in the history of the
country that a sitting President would be going on pilgrimage to the
Holy Land.
He urged the intending pilgrims to provide the
commission with accurate information that could help process their visas
in good time, saying the screening exercise was to ensure that only
those who were qualified were allowed to go on this year’s pilgrimage.
He emphasised that pregnant women and those who were found to have been
on government’s sponsorship to the Holy Land several times would be
automatically disqualified, adding that the commission would favour
first timers.
Earlier in his remarks, the chairman of the FCT
Christian Welfare Board, Dr Israel Akanji, urged the pilgrims to be good
ambassadors of the country while in the Holy Land.
